The Neighborhood: Step into the timeless allure of Capitol Hill - Kingman Park, where history comes to life amidst the backdrop of the U.S. Capitol and historic Eastern Market. This charming neighborhood boasts well-preserved row houses, cobblestone streets that lead to the Lincoln Park, and close proximity to landmarks like Barracks Row and the historic Congressional Cemetery, not to mention the Capitol itself and the National Mall. H Street, Navy Yard, and Union Market are all within walking and cycling distance! You'll be located in a historical and lively residential neighborhood, with quiet tree-lined streets, but also summertime fireworks, a community garden, and its own panda bear! (just a statue though) Top 5 Hang-out recs: 1. Lincoln Park and East Capitol Street (0.5 miles)--Lincoln Park is a charming tree-lined park. Walk from there down East Capitol Street, where you can view beautiful historic row homes with a direct sight line to the Capitol. 2. Anacostia River Walk Trail (0.5 miles)--A fantastic hidden treasure, this is a network of trails that run along the Anacostia River. You can follow the paths south to the Navy Yard. 3. Barracks Row (1.4 miles)--The most Capitol Hill aspect of Capitol Hill, buzzing with quaint shops and eateries. Call Your Mother is a local favorite for bagels and schmear. 4. National Mall (1.5 miles)--Walk from the Capitol Building along the full length of the National Mall to take in all the historic landmarks and over a dozen museums. The US Botanical Garden is one of my favorite: less than 2 miles from your Airbnb and just after you pass the Capitol Building. 5. The Navy Yard (1.7 miles)--One of the largest and newest developments in DC, the Navy Yard has cute shops, ice cream parlors, fancy restaurants, and large venues for concerts and performances. Kingman Park was officially designated a Historic District in June 2018, distinguishing its place in Washington DC's urban development history and recognizable rows of single-family homes characterized by front porches and variations in cornices and rooflines. The neighborhood is ideally located at close proximity of the restaurants and bars of H Street Corridor, and the parks, trails and open air activities in Kingman and Heritage Islands. Getting Around: Only a 10-minute walk to the Stadium/Armory METRO rail station with access to the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines, providing excellent access throughout the city. Numerous nearby bus stops including the D6, X2, etc. provide even.Numerous nearby bus lines including the D6 (US Capitol and Mall Museums), X2 (Downtown/Capitol One Arena), and B2 (National Arboretum, Roost) as well as the free H Street streetcar that will take you to Union Station METRO stop. There is an extensive network of bike lanes in DC, and both bikes and scooters are easily available. Capitol Bikeshare has a station 2.5 blocks away at 21st and D St. Lyft and Lime have bikes and scooters scattered throughout the city, almost always available 0-3 blocks away, and rentable thru their respective apps on your smartphone. Other Things to Note: Nearby Recommendations around the Neighborhood (w/Yelp ratings) Manna Dosirak (.3 miles, 4.7 stars, Korean): Yummy and reasonably-priced Korean just blocks away. Shewa: (.3 miles, 4.9 stars, Ethiopian): DC is a center of fantastic Ethiopian cuisine. This new neighborhood joint is no exception. Great place to grab takeout. The Hill Cafe: (.5 miles, 4.3 stars): Good place to grab coffee or get out of the home to work. Note: they close at 3 PM during the week and are closed on Sundays. Pacci's: (.9 miles, 4.5 stars, Italian): Perched on the corner of historic Lincoln Park, Pacci's brings a small slice of Italy to the neighborhood. Across the park the Wine & Butter Cafe & Market (4.3 stars) has become a go to for coffee and pastries enjoyed takeaway or at quaint outdoor seating. The Pretzel Bakery (.9 miles, 4.5 stars): Standout pretzels and a variety of other bakery/cafe items. The pretzel bombs are a delicious sweet treat. Roost: (1.3 miles, 4.1 stars, Food hall): Tacos, pizza, sushi, burgers, ramen, noodles, coffee, extensive beer and cocktail list? It's all under one convenient roof in a large food hall. The tacos, peanut noodles, and bao are our frequent picks. H Street / Corridor: This commercial street has transformed into a signature dining scene and distinctive neighborhood over the last 20 years. If you're walking/biking here, walking on H provides the adventure and city life. You can have a quieter neighborhood walk along D Street before cutting north to H closer to your destination. Daru (4.5 Stars, .5 miles, Indian): Inventive Indian fusion started by alums of one DC's consensus best Indian spots, Rasika. TIgo's Peruvian Express: (4.5 Stars, .9 miles): Tasty Peruvian for reasonable prices. Toki Underground: (4.1 Stars, .7 miles, Ramen/Izakaya): The spot that launched the ramen craze in DC, Toki remains a classic DC spot. Yummy and an experience. The Queen Vic: (4.1 Stars, .8 miles, British Pub): Classic English pub experience. Copycat Co: (4.3 Stars, .8 miles, Cocktail Bar/Chinese Food): Hip mixologists and a great space for intimate night out. Maketto (4.1 Stars, .6 miles, Cambodian): A great place to hit if you're feeling fashionable and in the mood for tasty treats. This is also a great cafe and work space during the day. Honored as Bib Gourmands by Michelin: Daru, Toki, Maketto Eastern Market area: Eastern Market, designated a National Historic Landmark, has been in continuous operation since 1873 and is the only of the original DC public markets still standing. Check out the delicious cheese mongerer and their Leiden cheese. Each weekend there is an outdoor farmer's market as well as clothes, arts, and antiques stalls occupying the streets southeast of Eastern Market. Stalls at Eastern Market: (1.3 miles, variety of cuisines for lunch/brunch): Tasty crepes, Mexican, West African, and other cuisines. Reasonably priced, located at the courtyard at the northwest corner of Eastern Market on weekends. Market Lunch: (4.1 Stars, 1.1 mile, Brunch): Classic Chesapeake Bay-inflected brunch at stand up tables inside the market. The Duck & The Peach (4.1 Stars, 1.1 miles, Brunch): Named one of DC best 100 restaurants, California cuisine with a touch of New England equals a light and tasty brunch. Barracks Row is another name for 8th St. SE near the Marine Barracks, a walled set of historic buildings dating all the way back to 1801 that serves as the official residence of the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Helpfully for visitors it's also home to a number of good restaurants: Ted's Bulletin (4 Stars, 1.5 miles, Brunch): Classic diner food with a modern twist, family-friendly yet stylish with the boozy milkshakes and homemade pop tarts providing the biggest twists. Ambar: (4.5 Stars, 1.6 miles, Balkan): If you love good bread, dips, and meat, this small plates spot is close to a must. You can bring your appetite and order all you can eat, or simply order a la carte. Call Your Mother Bagels: (4.2 Stars, 1.6 miles, Bagels): One of the originators of DC's bagel renaissance. Both the bagels and bagel sandwiches are delish. Rose's Luxury: (4.5 Stars, 1.7 miles, Fusion): Named Bon Appetit's best new restaurant of 2015, Rose's Luxury has aged gracefully earning a Michelin star for a fearless cuisine whose taste lives up to the reputation.
